Description | The MIN-6 cell line is a mouse pancreatic beta cell line derived from insulinomas in transgenic mice through the targeted expression of the simian virus 40 T antigen gene. These cells closely resemble pancreatic beta cells in terms of their morphology and ability to produce insulin and T antigen. MIN-6 cells demonstrate glucose-dependent insulin secretion similar to normal mouse islet cells and exhibit high levels of liver-type glucose transporter mRNA. However, recent research suggests that MIN-6 is not a pure beta cell line but rather a mixed cell line that also secretes glucagon, somatostatin, and ghrelin. Molecular analysis reveals the presence of various mRNAs associated with insulin I and II, proglucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide (PP), and ghrelin. Furthermore, immunofluorescence imaging reveals the coexistence of insulin-positive cells with double-positive cells expressing insulin and either glucagon or somatostatin within the MIN-6 cell population.
