The 293A cell line is a subclone derived from HEK293 cells and is characterized by its flat morphology. HEK293 cell was originally established from primary embryonal human kidney cells that had undergone transformation with sheared human adenovirus type 5 DNA. Notably, 293A cells express the genes encoded by the E1 region of adenovirus, which play a pivotal role in transactivating certain viral promoters. This unique feature enables 293A cells to produce exceptionally high levels of protein. Additionally, the expression of E1 genes in 293A cells allows them to complement E1-deleted recombinant adenoviral vectors, facilitating viral replication in research applications.
