Description

Human Small Airway Epithelial Cells (hSAECs) are primary cells isolated from the epithelial lining of distal bronchioles (less than 2 mm in diameter) in healthy human lung tissue. These adherent, polygonal cells display a cobblestone morphology and are cryopreserved at early passage to preserve their differentiation capacity. hSAECs express key airway epithelial markers including cytokeratin-18 (CK18), E-cadherin, MUC1, and surfactant proteins such as SP-A, and are capable of mucociliary differentiation under air-liquid interface (ALI) culture. They respond to cytokines, pollutants, and pathogens, making them ideal for respiratory disease modeling. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Human Small Airway Epithelial Cells (hSAECs) are essential for studying small airway remodeling, mucociliary clearance, and inflammatory responses in diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and bronchiolitis obliterans. These human airway epithelial cells support toxicology studies and viral infection modeling such as RSV and influenza, and inhalation drug delivery research. Under ALI conditions, they differentiate into goblet, ciliated, and basal-like cells, enabling physiologically relevant airway models.
