MDCK Derivation and Characters
Madin-Darby Canine Kidney cells (MDCK) are derived from kidney of normal female adult Cocker Spaniel canine. At first, MDCK heterogeneous was noticed due to the variable morphology, chromosome number from different laboratories analysis result. MDCK cells are then characterized by their growth, immunologic and cytogenetic properties, as well as their susceptibility to several viruses.

MDCK is a commonly used epithelial cell model to study viral infection, environmental pollutants and vaccines production. MDCK cells are also widely used to isolate influenza viruses due to their high susceptibility to infection with various influenza strains.

In the last few decades, MDCK cells were found to proliferate, form hollow tubules in monolayers and respond to the added collagen. Such discoveries suggest the possibility of a MDCK 3D culture.

Moreover, several strains with different resistive and transport properties have been derived from MDCK for different research purposes.
