Human urinary bladder carcinoma. Using new PCR based single locus fingerprint techniques, it was discovered that this cell line is identical to T-24.
ECV304 cell line is a spontaneously transformed human cell line originally mischaracterized as being derived from umbilical vein endothelial cells, but later confirmed to originate from a bladder carcinoma of an 82-year-old female patient. These cells exhibit characteristic epithelial-like properties, displaying a distinct cobblestone-like architecture when reaching confluent density and maintaining robust adherent monolayer growth in vitro. Molecular profiling reveals this line is characterized by recurrent somatic mutations in critical genes including HRAS, TERT, and TP53, contributing to its documented tumorigenic phenotype. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

ECV304 cells serve as a critical model in cancer research applications, particularly for studying molecular mechanisms in bladder carcinoma. These cells are primarily used for investigating oncogene functions, tumor suppressor pathways, and chemotherapy resistance mechanisms in epithelial malignancies. The cell line also facilitates research into tyrosine phosphorylation signaling networks relevant to tumor progression.
