Squamous carcinoma, This cell line has neither invasive nor metastatic potential and can grow in synthetic medium PF86-1.
HSC-2 is a human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell line originally derived from a metastatic cervical lymph node of a 69-year-old male patient with oral cancer. HSC-2 cells exhibit an epithelial-like morphology and grow as adherent monolayers in standard culture conditions. HSC-2 is genomically characterized with available mutation and expression profiles, including alterations in PIK3CA (p.His1047Arg) and a splice donor mutation in TP53, underscoring its relevance as a malignant tumor model. Based on published literature, HSC-2 has been used to investigate the role of Podocalyxin (PODXL) in tumor proliferation, where loss of PODXL reduced both in vitro growth and in vivo tumor volume, demonstrating its active contribution to OSCC tumorigenicity. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

HSC-2 cells are employed as an in vitro model of oral squamous cell carcinoma to study tumor cell proliferation mechanisms, tumor-associated gene functions (e.g., PODXL), and signal transduction pathways. They are also applied in drug sensitivity assays and preclinical evaluation of anticancer therapeutics relevant to OSCC research.
