Human colonic epithelial cells are CK20+ E-cadherin+ cells from colon tissue that grow tightly, support barrier, and mediate intestinal immune defense.
Human Colonic Epithelial Cells (HCECs) are primary cells isolated from the mucosal lining of the human colon. In vitro, they exhibit characteristic epithelial morphology with well-defined apical brush borders and tight junctions. These cells express key markers including cytokeratin 20 (CK20), villin, and E-cadherin, confirming their intestinal epithelial identity. HCECs play essential roles in nutrient absorption, barrier function, and mucosal immunity, making them invaluable for studying inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, and intestinal infections. The cells demonstrate functional electrogenic ion transport and produce mucus secretions when cultured under proper conditions. Within the colonic epithelium, these colon epithelial cells contribute to the integrity of the epithelial system, with the size of epithelial cells reflecting their functional specialization and barrier efficiency. The cells are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, syphilis, mycoplasma, fungi, yeast, and bacteria.

Human Colonic Epithelial Cells can be used to explore the physiological functions of the colon, such as nutrient absorption, mucus secretion, and immune regulation mechanisms, and help to understand the interaction between the intestinal microbiota and the host. These cells can also be used to study inflammatory bowel diseases, colon cancer, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Human Colonic Epithelial Cells are cells that line the inner surface of the colon. They are essential for absorbing water and electrolytes, producing mucus, and forming a barrier against pathogens and toxins.
Human Colonic Epithelial Cells can typically be passaged 3-5 times. However, with each passage, their epithelial characteristics may weaken. Therefore, it is generally recommended to use these cells within three passages to ensure their functionality and reliability in experiments.
Functionally, Human Colonic Epithelial Cells are specialized for absorbing water and electrolytes, producing mucus, and maintaining colonic health, whereas human intestinal epithelial cells focus more on nutrient absorption and interaction with gut microbiota.
Human Colonic Epithelial Cells are utilized in drug development to study drug absorption, metabolism, and toxicity specific to the colonic environment. They help researchers understand how drugs interact with colonic epithelial cells and assess their effectiveness and safety in treating colonic diseases such as ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer.
Human Colonic Epithelial Cells are isolated from human colonic tissue.
