Description

Human Mammary Basal Epithelial Cells (HMBECs) are primary epithelial cells isolated from healthy adult breast tissue, specifically from the basal/myoepithelial layer lining the ducts. In culture, these cells display a flattened, cobblestone morphology and adhere tightly to form a cohesive monolayer. They express ZO-1, consistent with basal cell identity observed in vivo. These markers define the basal progenitor phenotype and are key to understanding mammary lineage hierarchy and regenerative capacity. HMBECs are cryopreserved at an early passage to preserve physiological relevance. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and is rigorously tested to ensure it is free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HMBECs offer a biologically relevant platform for studying basal cell behavior, mammary gland development, and disease modeling. They are ideal for investigating epithelial-mesenchymal interactions, basal-to-luminal differentiation, and basement membrane signaling pathways. Additionally, they support research into basal-like breast cancer biology—in which CK5/14 and p63 expression are hallmarks of aggressive, therapy-resistant subtypes. These cells are also suitable for screening modulators of basal epithelial function and for evaluating regenerative therapeutics.
