Some define omental and mesenteric fat as the only true visceral fat.
Human Visceral Adipocytes (Includes Mesenteric, Peri-renal, Omental) are isolated from human visceral adipose tissue, including mesenteric, peri-renal, and omental fat depots, and primarily consist of mature adipocytes. Visceral adipocytes are large, spherical cells with a unilocular lipid droplet that occupies most of the cytoplasm, displacing the nucleus to the periphery. Mature adipocytes are terminally differentiated cells that do not proliferate in vitro and are therefore not suitable for routine passaging. They exhibit a distinct stromal-vascular fraction (SVF) containing preadipocytes, immune cells, and endothelial cells. The cells are metabolically active, secreting adipokines and cytokines that influence insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and cardiovascular health. Key molecular markers include high expression of fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4), adiponectin (ADIPOQ), and leptin (LEP), which regulate lipid metabolism and endocrine signaling. To ensure the quality of these primary cells, repeated freeze-thaw cycles are not recommended due to the fragile nature of these cells. The cells are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, syphilis, mycoplasma, fungi, yeast, and bacteria.

Human Visceral Adipocytes (Includes Mesenteric, Peri-renal, Omental) are widely used in metabolic and obesity-related research. These cells provide a relevant in vitro model for studying adipocyte biology, lipid storage and metabolism, adipokine secretion, and inflammatory responses associated with visceral adipose tissue. They are also useful for investigating cellular responses to metabolic stimuli and regulatory factors.
