Human B lymphocyte. Derived from bone marrow removed from a female patient with multiple myeloma.
IM-9 is a human EBV-transformed B lymphoblastoid cell line originally isolated in 1967 from the bone marrow of an adult female patient diagnosed with multiple myeloma. IM-9 cells are Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive B-lymphoblastoid cells. These cells grow as non-adherent lymphoblasts in suspension and express key B-cell surface markers including CD19 and CD20, along with receptors for insulin, calcitonin and growth hormone, and synthesize immunoglobulin G (IgG). They also express BCL2 mRNA, which is associated with apoptosis regulation and lymphoid cell survival. IM-9 human multiple myeloma cells are a well-characterized lymphoid model for in vitro research. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

IM-9 cells are used as an in vitro B-lymphoblastoid model for studying B-cell signaling, immunoglobulin synthesis, hormone receptor responses, and apoptosis regulation. They support investigations into hormone-mediated growth modulation (e.g., glucocorticoids), receptor biology, and lymphoid cell physiology, as well as drug sensitivity and mechanistic studies relevant to hematological research.
