Description

Human Intestinal Microvascular Endothelial Cells (HIMEC) are primary endothelial cells isolated from normal small-intestinal lamina propria microvessels. In culture, they form a cobblestone monolayer and express vWF/Factor VIII, CD31, and VE-cadherin, a junctional protein essential for endothelial barrier integrity, highlighting their endothelial characteristics. Acting as mucosal “gatekeepers”, HIMEC rapidly up-regulate E-selectin, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 and secrete IL-6/IL-8 upon LPS or cytokine challenge, directing leukocyte trafficking to inflamed gut tissue. Constitutive Toll-like-receptor-5 enables direct detection of bacterial flagellin, coupling epithelial infection to endothelial activation. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

They support leukocyte adhesion assays, endotoxin-tolerance and TLR5-flagellin signalling experiments, enabling discovery of anti-adhesion or anti-inflammatory therapeutics for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and sepsis. Their defined cytokine responses and inducible iNOS pathway facilitate drug and nutraceutical screening, while co-culture or organ-on-chip systems with epithelial cells allow investigation of barrier permeability, angiogenesis and microbiota-endothelium crosstalk.
