HMECs support diverse breast biology research including deciphering developmental processes (e.g. ductal branching, lactation) and modeling early-stage carcinogenesis. They are ideal for constructing 3D organoid systems, studying hormone signaling, and screening carcinogens or therapeutic agents. The presence of both luminal and basal cell compartments allows investigations into epithelial cell hierarchy and epithelial–mesenchymal transitions relevant to breast cancer initiation and progression. They serve as a valuable comparator to malignant cell lines, enabling more physiologically relevant assessment of tumor-specific changes and treatment responses in vitro.
