Description

Human Non Pigment Ciliary Epithelial Cells (HNPCEpiC) are primary epithelial cells isolated from the non-pigmented layer of the human ciliary body. These cells line the inner surface of the ciliary processes and play a central role in aqueous humor secretion and the maintenance of the blood–aqueous barrier, forming tight-junction monolayers under culture conditions. They exhibit characteristic polygonal, cobblestone morphology and express epithelial markers such as cytokeratin 18/19. Functionally, HNPCEpiCs maintain transepithelial resistance and facilitate directional ion and fluid transport, mediated by enzymes and channels including Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase and TRPP2. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and is rigorously tested to ensure it is free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HNPCEpiCs serve as a powerful in vitro system for investigating ocular physiology and pathophysiology. They are widely used to model aqueous humor secretion, blood–aqueous barrier function, and drug transport across the ciliary epithelium. Researchers employ these cells to study the mechanisms underlying glaucoma—such as TRPP2-mediated pressure sensing—and to evaluate pharmacological agents that modulate fluid dynamics or barrier integrity. Additionally, they are valuable for testing drug delivery systems for ocular therapeutics.
