Description

Human Pancreatic Microvascular Endothelial Cells (HPMECs) are primary cells isolated from microvessels within human pancreatic tissue. They exhibit classic cobblestone morphology and form tight monolayers in culture, demonstrating functional barrier properties. They express endothelial markers CD31(PECAM-1) and von Willebrand factor (vWF), while being negative for fibroblast markers such as FSP-1. These cells closely reflect the native islet endothelium, engaging in angiocrine signaling that supports β-cell survival, insulin secretion, and islet vascular plasticity. Functionally, HPMECs respond to VEGF-A and VEGF-C, and participate in capillary-like tube formation. As finite-life primary cells, they are not suitable for long-term passaging. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and is rigorously tested to ensure it is free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HPMECs are an ideal model for studying pancreatic microvascular biology and pathology, their primary application includes investigation into angiogenesis, endothelial-β cell crosstalk, vascular permeability, and drug screening. They are widely used to explore islet vascular adaptation in diabetes and to evaluate therapeutic strategies targeting angiocrine factors such as VEGF-A and HGF. Their utility spans functional assays like tube formation, barrier integrity, cytokine response, and co-culture systems with pancreatic islets.
