JAR is a human choriocarcinoma tumor cell line originally established from a trophoblastic tumor of the placenta of a 24-year-old woman, with the cells themselves derived from the male fetal component of the tumor. JAR cells grow as epithelial-like adherent monolayers and clusters in standard culture condition. JAR cells express placental hormones, including human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and studies show they can synthesize and regulate iodide transport via hormone-dependent mechanisms, making them useful for placental signaling research. They have also been utilized to investigate aspects of trophoblast biology such as cell polarity, adhesion, and hormone-mediated regulation processes. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

JAR cell line is used as an in vitro model of human choriocarcinoma and trophoblast-like cells for investigating tumor cell proliferation, placental hormone expression, hormone-regulated transport mechanisms (e.g., iodide uptake), and signal transduction related to gestational trophoblastic diseases. They also support studies into cell adhesion, differentiation dynamics, and drug sensitivity profiling relevant to choriocarcinoma biology.
