This cell line was derived from the L5178 thymic lymphoma induced by methylcholanthrene in a DBA/2 mouse;
L‑5178‑Y‑R is a murine T‑cell lymphoma cell line derived from methylcholanthrene‑induced thymic lymphoma in a DBA/2 mouse. The cells grow in suspension with lymphoblast morphology and exhibit resistance to X‑ray irradiation but sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, heat, and certain chemotherapeutic agents such as cis-platinum compounds. Over long-term culture, L‑5178‑Y‑R can convert to an X‑ray sensitive variant (L‑5178‑S), which is widely used as a comparative model of radiosensitivity. Tumorigenicity is observed in DBA/2 mice. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

L‑5178‑Y‑R is used as a model for radiation biology, DNA damage response, and lymphoma research, supporting studies of radiosensitivity, DNA repair pathways, genotoxicity, and chemotherapeutic response in lymphoid cells. It also serves in toxicology and mutagenicity assays and as a comparative system with L‑5178‑S for radiation and DNA repair studies.
