Description

Raji is a human B lymphocyte cell line established in 1963 from the peripheral blood of an 11-year-old Nigerian male diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma. These undifferentiated lymphoblasts grow predominantly as large, floating multicellular aggregates in suspension culture, exhibiting irregularly indented nuclei, abundant cytoplasm, and prominent clumping ribosomes. Raji cells harbor the characteristic t(8;14)(q24;q32) chromosomal translocation, resulting in MYC oncogene overexpression, a hallmark of Burkitt lymphoma. They are Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive, maintaining the virus in a latent state, making them a classical in vitro model for EBV-associated lymphoid malignancies. The karyotype is complex and highly aneuploid. Raji cells demonstrate tumorigenicity when xenografted into immunodeficient mice. Typical culture features include cellular debris and large cluster formation at high density. This cell line is widely utilized for studying viral oncogenesis, B-cell immunobiology, and lymphoma pathogenesis.
