Interleukin-6 (IL-6) works as a multifunctional cytokine that plays important roles in regulating immune responses, inflammation, hematopoiesis, etc.
IL-6 (interleukin 6), also known as IL6, is a multifunctional α-helical cytokine that regulates cell growth and differentiation. As a phosphorylated and variably glycosylated molecule, IL-6 protein is secreted by a variety types of cells including T cells and macrophages. It activates through its heterodimeric receptor IL-6 signals through a heterodimeric receptor IL-6R, which expresses gp130 but lacks intrinsic kinase activity. The IL-6/IL-6R/gp130 complex binds IL-6 with high affinity and transduces downstream signals. IL-6 is also involved in hematopoiesis, bone metabolism, and cancer progression, and has been defined as an essential role in directing the transition from innate to acquired immunity.
