Description

Capan-2 is a human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell line derived from a liver metastasis of a 56-year-old Caucasian male patient diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. These cells exhibit an epithelial morphology with cobblestone-like arrangements and grow as adherent monolayers in vitro. Capan-2 retains the ability to form tight junctions and polarized structures, expressing functional E-cadherin and forming dome-like colonies in culture. Karyotypic analysis revealed hypotriploid characteristics with multiple chromosomal aberrations. Importantly, Capan-2 cells express wild-type KRAS but harbor mutations in TP53 and SMAD4, which are frequently altered in pancreatic tumors. This cell line is moderately tumorigenic in immunodeficient mice and is often used in xenograft studies. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Capan-2 is widely used to study pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma biology, epithelial differentiation, and drug response. Its functional E-cadherin expression and ability to form polarized monolayers make it a valuable model for analyzing cell adhesion, invasion, and TGF-β-related signaling pathways. It also serves in preclinical evaluations of chemotherapeutic agents and targeted therapies, including EGFR and SMAD pathway modulators.
