Learn about COLO-824, a breast carcinoma cell line from pleural effusion, showing hyperdiploid karyotype and distinct adherent properties.
COLO-824 is a human breast carcinoma cell line established in 1991 from the pleural effusion of a 52-year-old female patient with invasive breast cancer. The cells grow as loosely adherent monolayers, with some forming suspended aggregates, exhibiting epithelial-like morphology and characteristic COLO-824 cell proliferation behavior with a doubling time of 60–80 hours. Cytogenetic analysis reveals a highly rearranged, high-diploid karyotype with approximately 11% polyploidy, making this cell line suitable for COLO-824 variation studies focused on chromosomal instability. COLO-824 is characterized as triple-negative (ER⁻, PR⁻, weak HER2 expression) and lacks p53 protein, consistent with a basal-like subtype. The cell line is tumorigenic in immunocompromised mice and is routinely used in standard COLO-824 laboratory techniques to investigate triple-negative breast cancer biology, epigenetic regulation, and therapeutic responses. In addition, its well-documented genomic complexity supports downstream COLO-824 bioinformatics analysis in cancer research workflows.

The COLO-824 cell line facilitates breast cancer research. Cell viability assays with COLO-824 can help screen phytochemicals or drugs that may reduce the risk of breast cancer, an important step for prevention and treatment. This cell line is also useful for epigenetic discovery and xenograft experimentation. Moreover, applying COLO-824 to identify new therapeutic and prognostic biomarkers at the molecular level can enhance our understanding of breast cancer.
