Human Astrocytes-Brain Stem from AcceGen Research Laboratories are isolated from human brain stem.
Human Brain Stem Astrocytes (HA-bs) are primary cells isolated from healthy human brain stem. Following primary culture, these cells are cryopreserved. These specialized glial cells demonstrate characteristic star-shaped morphology and play essential roles in central nervous system homeostasis. They mediate astrocyte-neuron communication and underpin key processes including brainstem astrocyte metabolism, while providing a variety of supportive functions to their partner neurons in the central nervous system (CNS), such as neuronal guidance during development, and nutritional and metabolic support throughout life. Astrocytes have also been shown to be implicated in various pathological processes. Impairment of normal astrocyte functions during stroke and other insults can critically influence neuron survival. Long-term recovery after brain injury, through neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, or neuron regeneration, is influenced by astrocyte surface molecule expression and trophic factor release. Robust expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is confirmed, validating astrocyte identity. For optimal performance, repeated freezing and thawing should be avoided during culture. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Human Astrocytes-Brain Stem serve as a physiologically relevant in vitro model to study neuroinflammatory pathogenesis in conditions like brainstem encephalitis and Parkinson’s disease. Their regionally distinct properties enable investigation of TNF-α/NF-κB-driven complement C3 overproduction and its role in synapse elimination and blood-brain barrier disruption.
