Human Astrocytes-Hippocampal from AcceGen Research Laboratories are isolated from human brain hippocampal tissue.
Human Astrocytes-Hippocampus are primary cells isolated from human hippocampus. Following the primary culture, the cells are cryopreserved. They typically exhibit characteristic stellate morphology and grow as adherent monolayers while maintaining their essential neurosupportive functions. As key regulators of hippocampal homeostasis, they participate in neuronal survival, neurotransmitter balance, and extracellular ion regulation, and the immune response of hippocampal astrocytes. They have been shown to be implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, as well as epilepsy, due to their role in hippocampal function. Robust expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is confirmed, validating their astrocytic identity. Cryopreserved with a normal diploid karyotype, they maintain physiological properties but require careful culture conditions to preserve their specialized hippocampal characteristics. Repeated freezing and thawing should be avoided during culture. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Human Astrocytes-Hippocampus can serve as an in vitro cell model to investigate the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders. Their region-specific properties enable investigation of astrocyte-neuron interactions in Alzheimer’s disease, including amyloid-beta metabolism and tau propagation pathways. Researchers can utilize this system to study epileptogenesis mechanisms through glutamate transporter dysfunction and potassium buffering impairment.
