Description

Human Epidermal Melanocytes-dark (HEM-d) are spindle-shaped, adherent cells derived from normal human skin obtained from healthy donors. As neural crest–origin pigment cells, they reside in the basal layer of the epidermis and transfer melanin-containing melanosomes to keratinocytes via dendritic projections, contributing to cutaneous pigmentation and UV protection. HEM-d express characteristic markers including NGF receptor (p75), fibronectin, and S100β. These cells are cryopreserved at early passage. Their defined morphology makes HEM-d a reliable model in pigment biology and dermatological studies. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HEM-d cells are widely used in research on melanin biosynthesis, melanocyte-keratinocyte interactions, and pigment regulation in 2D and 3D skin equivalents. Their expression of CITED1 enables transcriptional studies on melanogenesis and melanoma progression. These cells serve as models for pigmentary disorders such as vitiligo and Waardenburg syndrome, and support screening of whitening agents, antioxidants, and UV-protective compounds in dermatological studies.
