Description

Human Epidermal Melanocytes-light (HEM-light) are adherent, spindle-shaped pigment cells derived from normal human neonatal skin obtained from healthy donors. As neural crest–derived cells, they reside within the basal epidermal layer, synthesizing melanin in melanosomes and extending dendritic processes to transfer pigments to keratinocytes, supporting skin pigmentation and UV defense. These cells express characteristic melanocyte markers including NGF-receptor (p75), fibronectin, S100β, MITF, TYRP1, and gp100/HMB-45. Cryopreserved at early passage, their defined morphology and light-pigmented phenotype make them an excellent model for pigment biology and photoprotection studies. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HEM-light cells are ideal for studies of lower baseline melanogenesis, dendritic pigment transfer, and melanosome packaging in lightly pigmented skin models. They support mechanistic research into UV response, melanin-type balance (eumelanin vs pheomelanin), and pigmentary disorder therapeutics, such as vitiligo and hypopigmentation. Their well-characterized marker profile and human origin also make them suitable for preclinical screening of depigmenting agents, antioxidants, and cosmetic actives within 2D/3D skin equivalents.
