Human Intestinal Smooth Muscle Cells

Human Intestinal Smooth Muscle Cells (HISMC) are primary cells derived from normal human intestinal tissue and display a characteristic elongated, spindle-shaped morphology. They contribute to peristalsis by generating contractile force in the muscularis propria via Ca²⁺-dependent excitation–contraction coupling. HISMC exhibit functional plasticity, and in response to intestinal inflammation, upregulate α-smooth muscle actin and undergo hyperplasia, resulting in smooth muscle layer thickening. These cells also participate in gut immune responses by secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 upon stimulation with TNF-α and IL-1β. Cultured HISMC retain expression of contractile markers and provide a valuable system for dissecting smooth muscle dynamics under physiological and pathological conditions including motility disorders, fibrosis, and IBD. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.
