Description

Human Rectal Smooth Muscle Cells (HRecSMCs) are primary cells derived from the muscularis propria layer of healthy human rectal tissue. These adherent, spindle-shaped cells display the characteristic "hill-and-valley" growth pattern typical of visceral smooth muscle. Isolated under sterile conditions and cryopreserved at early passage, HRecSMCs retain their contractile phenotype and express key smooth muscle markers, including α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SM-MHC), and h-caldesmon. These cells respond to neurotransmitters and mechanical stretch, modeling physiological contraction and relaxation dynamics of the rectal wall. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Human Rectal Smooth Muscle Cells (HRecSMCs), also known as primary human rectum SMCs or human lower intestinal smooth muscle, are widely used to investigate rectal motility, enteric neurotransmission, and smooth muscle remodeling in gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic constipation, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are also valuable for evaluating prokinetic agents, anti-fibrotic therapies, and modeling smooth muscle–immune interactions in the GI tract. In tissue engineering, HRecSMCs support the development of bioengineered intestinal models and regenerative medicine approaches targeting smooth muscle repair.
