Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) support vascular biology, angiogenesis modeling, and endothelial barrier function in vitro systems.
Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) are isolated from the vein of umbilical cord. These cells exhibit cobblestone morphology with large dark nuclei. They express many important endothelial signal molecules, for example von Willebrand factor (vWF), which is associated with vascular homeostasis regulation, platelet adhesion and vascular tone. HUVECs can be identified by the expression of specific marker proteins, including PECAM-1, VE-cadherin, and VWF. These cells maintain many functional properties of vascular endothelium, such as angiogenesis capability, inflammatory response, and vascular permeability regulation. Due to their accessibility and robust growth characteristics, HUVECs have become one of the most widely used in vitro systems for investigating endothelial cell physiology, vascular diseases, and drug screening applications. HUVEC culture requires specialized HUVEC medium to maintain their endothelial properties, supporting long-term viability and functionality in studies related to angiogenesis and vascular diseases.

Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) can be used as a laboratory model for studying vasculature and angiogenesis.
