Description

Brain microvascular endothelial cells possess numerous tight junctions between cells, resulting in a high transendothelial electrical resistance and delayed paracellular flux. The endothelial cells of brain microvessels are tightly apposed, unlike the vascular endothelial cells of other tissues, which have larger gaps. Brain microvascular endothelial cells lack fenestrations, a structural feature of endothelial cells found elsewhere, and exhibit a low level of fluid-phase endocytosis.
