Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is a potent mediator first described as an essential growth factor for vascular endothelial cells.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as vascular permeability factor (VPF) and VEGF-A, is a potent mediator of both angiogenesis and vasculogenesis in the fetus and adult. VEGF121 is a naturally-occurring VEGF-A splice variant containing 121 amino acids, produced from a single human gene as a result of alternative splicing. VEGF121 is involved in embryonic vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Different from the larger VEGF isoforms, VEGF121 is the only VEGF type that does not bind to heparin.
