Established in 1973 from cotton-top tamarin lymphocytes, B95-8 cells produce infectious EBV, grow in suspension, aid virology and B cell transformation.
B95-8 is a lymphoblastoid cell line established in 1973 from the peripheral blood lymphocytes of a cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), infected with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). B95-8 cells grow predominantly in suspension with round to oval morphology, occasionally forming small clumps, and around 10% of the cells show slight adherence. They are known for their productive EBV infection, making them a robust tool for EBV propagation. These cells carry a near-diploid simian karyotype with chromosomal abnormalities. B95-8 cells harbor a latent EBV genome with deletions in the BamHI W region, which alters viral gene expression compared to wild-type EBV strains. While B95-8 cells are not tumorigenic in immunodeficient mice, their EBV-infecting ability makes them essential in virology, immunology, and cancer biology research.

The B95-8 cell line is a classic model for EBV research, used to reveal the latent infection mechanism of EBV, the oncogenic effects of viral genes (such as LMP-1 and EBNA-2), and the interaction between the virus and host cells. In addition, B95-8 cells can continuously secrete infectious EBV particles, so they are often used as a tool for EBV virus amplification to provide a virus source for the laboratory.
