The B95-8 cell line was established in 1973 from the peripheral blood lymphocytes of a cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), transformed by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is widely used to produce high titers of infectious EBV, facilitating the generation of EBV-transformed human B cell lines. B95-8 cells grow predominantly in suspension with round to oval morphology, occasionally forming small clumps, and around 10% of the cells show slight adherence. These cells carry a near-diploid simian karyotype with chromosomal abnormalities and are EBV-positive but free of HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-I/II, HBV, HCV, and CMV. Some batches may contain Type D retrovirus, so screening is recommended. B95-8 cells are responsive to B cell factors like sCD23 and are commonly used in virology and lymphocyte transformation research.

The B95-8 cell line is a classic model for EBV research, used to reveal the latent infection mechanism of EBV, the oncogenic effects of viral genes (such as LMP-1 and EBNA-2), and the interaction between the virus and host cells. In addition, B95-8 cells can continuously secrete infectious EBV particles, so they are often used as a tool for EBV virus amplification to provide a virus source for the laboratory.
