Hamster Chinese lung. Derived from the lung of a female Chinese hamster.
CHL cells are derived from the lung tissue of the female Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus). They grow as an adherent monolayer, displaying fibroblast-like morphology with tight intercellular contacts. The cells are karyotypically diploid to slightly hyperdiploid with a modal chromosome number of 25, and show high genomic stability, making them well-suited for genetic toxicology applications. They demonstrate sensitivity to mutagenesis and are frequently used in chromosomal aberration and micronucleus assays, providing valuable model for genotoxicity and cytotoxicity testing. CHL cells also support replication of various viruses, making them valuable for virology studies. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from mycoplasma, fungi, yeast, and bacteria.

CHL cells are a standard model for in vitro chromosomal aberration (CA) and micronucleus (MN) assays, particularly in regulatory genotoxicity screening. Their high sensitivity to mutagens and stable chromosomal composition (modal number = 25) make them ideal for identifying DNA damage and aneuploidy. CHL cells are also used in virology to study virus-host interactions and in pharmacology for drug-induced cytotoxicity profiling. Their adherent growth and consistent morphology enable reproducible results in multi-well formats, supporting high-throughput screening of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and environmental toxins.
