Description

Human Epidermal Melanocytes-Medium (HEM-medium) are adherent, spindle-shaped pigment cells derived from normal neonatal human skin obtained from healthy donors. As neural crest–origin cells, they localize to the basal epidermis and transfer melanin-filled melanosomes to keratinocytes via dendrites, contributing to skin pigmentation and UV protection. HEM-medium express characteristic melanocyte markers including NGF receptor (p75), fibronectin, MITF, TRPM1, and gp100/PMEL, confirming their functional identity in melanogenesis. Their clearly defined morphology, medium pigmentation level, and stable gene expression make them ideal for pigmentation biology, skin disease modeling, and UV-related research. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HEM-medium melanocytes provide a reliable model for studying moderate-level melanin synthesis, dendritic pigment transfer, and epidermal UV response. They are valuable in understanding the cellular basis of pigmentary conditions like piebaldism and vitiligo, and are suitable for use in 2D and 3D skin equivalents. HEM-medium also support the evaluation of melanogenesis-targeted drugs, depigmenting agents, and antioxidant-based skincare compounds in dermatology and cosmetic research pipelines.
