HPCs serve as valuable models for liver regeneration, ductular reaction analysis, and hepatocarcinogenesis studies by enabling differentiation into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes under modulation of Notch, Wnt/β-catenin, and other pathways. They are excellent tools for assessing drug metabolism, toxicology, and safety screening, given their hepatic lineage functions. These cells are also used in disease modeling of chronic liver injury, fibrosis, and hepatic cancer stem cell behavior, and as potential candidates for cell-based therapeutic strategies.
