Description

Human Skin Stratum Corneum Cells (hSCCs) are derived from the outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, which is composed primarily of terminally differentiated, enucleated keratinocytes known as corneocytes. These cells form a key barrier against environmental insults, pathogens, and water loss. hSCCs are isolated from healthy human skin using non-invasive or minimally invasive exfoliation techniques and exhibit a flattened, polygonal morphology in suspension. As terminally differentiated cells, they do not proliferate or divide but are essential for studying skin barrier function and the biochemical properties of the cornified envelope. They express key structural proteins such as involucrin, loricrin, and filaggrin, confirmed via immunostaining and proteomic profiling. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Human Skin Stratum Corneum Cells serve as a critical model for investigating epidermal barrier function, transdermal drug permeation, and pathological conditions affecting skin integrity. These specialized cells are particularly valuable for evaluating cosmetic formulations and topical pharmaceuticals, enabling precise assessment of product efficacy and skin compatibility. Their application extends to studying moisture retention mechanisms, lipid bilayer organization, and permeability alterations in disorders like psoriasis and ichthyosis. Furthermore, stratum corneum cells enhance the physiological relevance of 3D skin equivalents, facilitating advanced research in dermatotoxicology and transdermal delivery systems while reducing reliance on animal testing.
