KATO III is a human gastric carcinoma cell line that was originally isolated from the pleural effusion of a 55-year-old, Asian male patient with stomach cancer. KATO III exhibits spherical morphology and semi-adherent culture properties. This cell line is tumorigenic but does not form tumors in nude mice. Notably, KATO III cells are negative for p53 expression and positive for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) expression.

KATO III is a human gastric carcinoma cell line extensively used in cancer research. It supports the screening of compounds that induce apoptosis or exhibit cytotoxicity in gastric cancer cells. Additionally, it is employed to identify drug candidates for treating digestive tract cancers, especially in overcoming chemotherapy resistance. This cell line is instrumental in advancing therapeutic strategies for gastric malignancies.
