L6 cells fuse in culture to form multinucleated myotubes and striated fibers.
L6 is a rat myoblast cell line derived from normal skeletal muscle of Rattus norvegicus. The cells exhibit elongated spindle morphology, grow adherently, and fuse in culture to form multinucleated myotubes and striated fibers, a process that declines with passage. L6 cells are commonly used to study muscle differentiation, myogenesis, and contractile protein expression, including regulation of myosin heavy chain isoforms during myotube maturation. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

L6 is widely used in skeletal muscle biology, myoblast fusion assays, metabolic studies, and screening of drugs affecting muscle growth or differentiation. It is also extensively applied in glucose uptake and insulin signaling research as an in vitro skeletal muscle model. Its robust fusion capability makes it a reliable system for myotube formation and muscle regeneration research.
