Description

Rat Islets, also known as pancreatic islets or islets of Langerhans, are freshly isolated multicellular clusters derived from the pancreas of healthy rats. These spherical micro-organs consist primarily of insulin-producing β-cells, glucagon-secreting α-cells, somatostatin-secreting δ-cells, and pancreatic polypeptide-producing PP cells. Under optimized culture conditions, Rat Islets can partially maintain aspects of their native architecture and glucose-responsive insulin secretion in short-term in vitro culture. Islets are typically maintained as three-dimensional clusters under suspension or low-adhesion conditions, supporting short-term viability in vitro. Islet integrity and function are carefully maintained through optimized isolation and cryopreservation processes. To ensure optimal performance and insulin responsiveness, repeated freeze-thaw cycles are not recommended. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Rat pancreatic islets are widely used in diabetes research, particularly for studying β-cell function, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, and islet transplantation models. They serve as a physiologically relevant model for drug screening, immunological rejection studies, islet regeneration, and evaluating therapeutic interventions for both Type I and Type II diabetes. Their preserved multicellular structure enables accurate modeling of endocrine crosstalk and metabolic signaling. These islets also support real-time assays of insulin kinetics, oxidative stress responses, and β-cell survival under diabetic conditions.
