The tissue of the central nervous system is made up of two classes of cells that may be broadly categorized as neurons and glia.
Rat Neurons-Substantia Nigra are primary neuronal cells isolated from the substantia nigra of embryonic day 14 rats. These neurons exhibit typical neuronal morphology with extended neurites and complex branching patterns. Functionally, these cells are involved in neural signal transmission. These cells are terminally differentiated and non-proliferative in vitro. Rat Neurons-Substantia Nigra express neuronal markers β-tubulin III and MAP2. To ensure the quality of these primary cells, repeated freeze-thaw cycles are not recommended due to the fragile nature of these cells. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and is rigorously tested to ensure it is free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Rat substantia nigra neurons are widely used in in vitro and in vivo studies to investigate neurodegeneration mechanisms, including α-synuclein aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation. Additionally, they are valuable in electrophysiological studies due to their distinct firing patterns, aiding in understanding basal ganglia circuitry and neuromodulation, given their unique inherent characteristics.
