Description

MRC-5 (also commonly abbreviated as MRC5) is a human lung fibroblast cell line derived from the normal lung tissue of a 14-week-old male fetus. These adherent, spindle-shaped cells exhibit typical fibroblast morphology and a finite lifespan, undergoing senescence after a defined number of population doublings. MRC-5 cells maintain a normal diploid karyotype, express fibroblast markers such as vimentin, and synthesize extracellular matrix components including collagen. They demonstrate contact inhibition and lack tumorigenic potential, making them a reliable model for normal human fibroblast biology. MRC-5 cells are widely employed in studies of cellular aging, respiratory physiology, viral vaccine production, and drug toxicity assessment due to their physiological relevance and stable growth characteristics.

Application

  • MRC-5 cells enable vaccine production against hepatitis A, varicella, and rabies and support viral research by studying replication/infection mechanisms of poliovirus 1, herpes simplex virus, and SARS-CoV-2 for antiviral development. They facilitate cancer research investigating tumor microenvironments and cancer-fibroblast interactions while offering potential stem cell applications due to fibroblast-like morphology and differentiation capacity. These cells further serve in biopharmaceutical/vaccine manufacturing and provide PCR control material via gDNA products to assess inhibition in bioproduction processes.
