Description

Rat Brain Astrocytes are primary glial cells isolated from the cerebral cortex of rats. These polygonal to stellate cells are highly supportive of neuronal function, expressing characteristic markers such as GFAP, GLAST, and S100β, and forming extensive processes that contribute to brain homeostasis. They play essential roles in neuronal guidance during development, synapse formation, and extracellular matrix modulation; notably, astrocyte-derived ECM coatings have been shown to protect neural tissue and reduce reactive gliosis in implant studies. Furthermore, astrocytes actively regulate extracellular potassium and neurotransmitter levels, and participate in gliotransmission—affecting neuronal excitability and network activity—establishing them as critical components of the tripartite synapse. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Rat Brain Astrocytes are extensively employed in central nervous system (CNS) research to study neuroinflammation, glial–neuronal interactions, and synaptic modulation. They serve as key in vitro models for investigating neurotoxicity, gliosis, and neurodegenerative processes such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and ischemic injury. Additionally, their regulatory role in neurotransmitter uptake and potassium buffering makes them essential for modeling the tripartite synapse and screening neuroprotective compounds in drug development.
