Description

Rat Dermal Fibroblasts-Neonatal (RDFn) are primary cells isolated from the dermal layer of neonatal rat skin, offering a reliable model for studying connective tissue dynamics during early development. These fibroblasts exhibit a characteristic spindle-shaped morphology, strong adherence to tissue culture-treated surfaces, and form contact-inhibited, elongated monolayers under standard conditions. Neonatal fibroblasts are known for their vigorous proliferative capacity and higher metabolic activity compared to adult-derived cells, making them particularly responsive to cytokines, growth factors, and environmental stimuli. They express mesenchymal markers such as vimentin, fibronectin, and procollagen I, which are essential for extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and tissue remodeling. They are cryopreserved at low passage to retain high post-thaw viability and phenotypic stability. To ensure optimal performance and consistency, repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Neonatal rat dermal fibroblasts are widely used in dermatological and regenerative research to model skin development, wound healing, and scar formation. Due to their ability to mimic native fibroblast behavior in vitro, they are an excellent choice for investigating fibroblast-ECM interactions, fibrosis pathways, and cytokine signaling. RDFn are also used in drug toxicity assays, biomaterial testing, and 3D skin equivalent construction. Their neonatal origin provides a more proliferative and less senescent phenotype, making them especially suitable for long-term culture studies.
