Hepatic stellate cells (HSteC) are intralobular connective tissue cells presenting myofibroblastlike or lipocyte phenotypes.

Description

Rat Hepatic Stellate Cells (RHSCs) are liver-resident pericytes isolated from the space of Disse in rat hepatic tissue. In their quiescent state, these cells are characterized by their capacity to store vitamin A in cytoplasmic lipid droplets and express markers such as desmin, GFAP, and cellular retinol-binding protein 1 (CRBP-1). Upon liver injury or inflammatory stimulation, RHSCs activate into myofibroblast-like cells, expressing α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and secreting extracellular matrix components. This transdifferentiation plays a central role in hepatic fibrogenesis. To ensure experimental consistency, repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Rat Hepatic Stellate Cells (RHSCs) are indispensable for studying liver fibrosis, hepatic regeneration, and the cellular mechanisms underlying chronic liver diseases such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis. They are widely used to investigate fibrotic signaling pathways, ECM remodeling, retinoid metabolism, and stellate cell-hepatocyte interactions. RHSCs are also utilized in high-throughput screening of antifibrotic agents and co-culture models simulating hepatic microenvironments in both 2D and 3D systems.
