Description

Rat Intestinal Epithelial Cells are primary cells isolated from the mucosal layer of the rat small intestine. These cells exhibit a polarized, cobblestone morphology and form tight, adherent monolayers under optimized culture conditions. They firmly adhere to collagen- or fibronectin-coated surfaces and display functional apical-basal polarity typical of intestinal epithelium. Rat Intestinal Epithelial Cells express key markers such as cytokeratin 18, E-cadherin, and ZO-1. The cells also exhibit brush border enzyme activity, including alkaline phosphatase and sucrase-isomaltase, reflecting their absorptive epithelial phenotype. These cells are cryopreserved at early passage to retain high viability and functional integrity. For optimal performance and to maintain cellular integrity, repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Murine intestinal epithelial cells provide a physiologically relevant model for studying intestinal barrier function, nutrient absorption, epithelial transport, and mucosal immunity. They are widely used in pharmacokinetic research, gut microbiota–epithelium interaction studies, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) models. Their ability to mimic tight junction formation and secrete immune mediators makes them suitable for investigating epithelial responses to pathogens, probiotics, cytokines, and oral drug candidates in both fundamental and translational research contexts.
