Description

Rat Lens Epithelial Cells are primary cells isolated from the anterior lens capsule of healthy neonatal or juvenile rats. These cells form tightly packed, polygonal monolayers and display strong adherence to tissue culture-treated or extracellular matrix-coated surfaces. In vitro, they retain characteristic epithelial features, including well-organized intercellular junctions reminiscent of the native anterior lens epithelium. Rat Lens Epithelial Cells express markers including αA-crystallin, Pax6, β-catenin, and connexin-43, which is also expressed in lens epithelial cells, which are involved in maintaining lens homeostasis, differentiation, and cell-to-cell communication. Their proliferative capacity, genetic stability, and responsiveness to oxidative and metabolic stress make them an ideal model for ocular research. Cryopreserved at an early passage, they maintain high post-thaw viability and consistent morphology. For optimal performance, repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Rat Lens Epithelial Cells are used extensively to study lens development, transparency maintenance, and cataractogenesis. They serve as a reliable model for investigating oxidative stress-induced damage, diabetic cataract formation, and epithelial-to-fiber cell differentiation. These cells are ideal for pharmacological screening of anti-cataract compounds, nutrient transport studies, and lens regeneration models. Their epithelial characteristics also support investigations into cell cycle regulation and age-related lens degeneration.
