Description

Vero cell line is derived from the kidney of the African green monkey (Cercopithecus Aethiops). These cells exhibit an epithelial-like morphology and grow in a monolayer, displaying anchorage-dependent growth in vitro. A key feature of Vero cells is their defective type I interferon response—they lack functional interferon-alpha (IFN-α) and interferon-beta (IFN-β) genes due to a chromosomal deletion.Vero cells have a pseudodiploid karyotype with known chromosomal abnormalities, including the deletion of the type I interferon gene cluster on chromosome 12. This deficiency makes them highly susceptible to viral infections, as they cannot mount a robust innate immune defense against viruses . Consequently, Vero cells are extensively used for viral propagation, including the cultivation of polio, rabies, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Vero cells are non-tumorigenic in vivo but exhibit continuous proliferation in vitro, making them suitable for long-term viral production.
