Description

Human Esophageal Smooth Muscle Cells (HESMC) are spindle-shaped, contractile smooth muscle lineages derived from normal adult human esophageal smooth muscle layers obtained from healthy donors. They exhibit characteristic expression of α-smooth muscle actin and desmin, confirming their smooth muscle lineage and contractile function. HESMC play a pivotal role in esophageal peristalsis mediated via intracellular Ca²⁺ signaling, G-protein coupled mechanisms, and PKCε pathways. They also express functional voltage-dependent sodium channels, supporting cell excitability and contraction in vitro. Their defined morphology, phenotype, and functional properties make them ideal for studying esophageal motility, smooth muscle signaling, and contractile physiology. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by HIV-1, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • HESMC are suited for investigating the molecular mechanisms of esophageal peristalsis, including intracellular Ca²⁺ dynamics, PKC activation, and sodium channel function. They serve as in vitro models for motility disorders like achalasia and esophageal spasm, enabling drug screening for smooth muscle relaxants, ion channel modulators, and contractility-targeted therapeutics. These cells also support tissue engineering efforts to recreate esophageal muscle layers for regenerative medicine applications and physiological response testing in co-culture systems.
