The most abundant cell type in lung interstitium is fibroblasts.
Rat Pulmonary Fibroblasts (RPFs) are mesenchymal cells primarily isolated from the lung tissue of rats, serving as a key cellular component of the pulmonary interstitium. These cells are typically spindle-shaped or stellate in morphology, exhibiting elongated cytoplasmic processes that facilitate their interaction with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and neighboring cells. They are crucial in maintaining lung structural integrity by producing ECM components like collagen, fibronectin, and elastin. RPFs highly express the fibroblast marker Vimentin. To ensure the quality of these primary cells, repeated freeze-thaw cycles are not recommended due to the fragile nature of these cells. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and is rigorously tested to ensure it is free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Rat Pulmonary Fibroblasts (RPFs) are widely used in biomedical research due to their critical role in lung homeostasis and disease. These cells serve as a primary model for studying pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive and often fatal condition characterized by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. In vitro, RPFs are employed to investigate fibroblast activation, myofibroblast differentiation, and the effects of pro-fibrotic cytokines.
