Human Hepatocytes are isolated from the human liver tissue. Hepatocytes are the main parenchymal cells of the liver, occupying most of the liver’s volume (about 80%). These cells are rich in Golgi apparatus and mitochondria, enabling them to perform essential functions in metabolism, protein synthesis, and detoxification.Studies have shown that in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatocytes undergo a series of metabolic changes such as the decreased ketone body production and increased glycolysis. In vitro, human hepatocytes display a polygonal morphology, form tight junctions, and exhibit adherent monolayer growth. Hepatocytes also have immune functions and can produce and secrete innate immune proteins such as Complement C3, Lectin MBL, MAp19, MASP1, 2 3, and C-reactive protein (CRP), which can activate innate immunity, directly eliminate pathogens, and coordinate the immune system to fight pathogens

Human Hepatocytes can be used to study the mechanism of liver disease. These cells can also be used for safety assessment (such as prediction of liver toxicity) and metabolic kinetics research during the drug development stage, helping to improve the reliability of clinical trials.
Human Hepatocytes are the main functional cells of the liver, responsible for various metabolic processes, detoxification, and protein synthesis. They are isolated from donor’s liver tissue through enzymatic digestion and are either freshly isolated or cryopreserved for research use.
Human Hepatocytes are widely used in drug metabolism studies, toxicology testing, liver disease research, pharmacokinetic studies, and tissue engineering. They serve as a critical model for understanding liver function and drug interactions.
Human Hepatocytes are primary cells with normal liver cell functions, making them more physiologically relevant for certain studies. In contrast, hepatoma cell lines, such as HepG2, are cancer-derived and may not accurately represent normal liver function, particularly in drug metabolism and toxicity studies.
No, Human Hepatocytes cannot be passaged in culture like immortalized cell lines. They are primary cells, meaning they have a limited lifespan and do not proliferate in culture. After a few days in culture, hepatocytes will begin to lose their specific liver functions and eventually undergo senescence. For extended studies, it is often necessary to use fresh or cryopreserved hepatocytes for each experiment rather than attempting to passage them.
We offer both suspension and Platable Human Hepatocytes in various formats and quantities. Please contact our sales team for detailed information on the specific options available.
