Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the primary source of extracellular matrix and are normally in a quiescent state. When the liver is damaged by inflammation, mechanical stimuli, or other insults, HSCs become activated, transitioning from a quiescent phenotype to an activated one. Upon activation, HSCs transform into myofibroblast-like cells. Various profibrotic factors ultimately target HSCs.
