Description

Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (RAOSMC) are contractile cells isolated from the tunica and media of healthy, plaque-free rat aortae. These spindle-shaped cells exhibit the classic “hill-and-valley” pattern and express contractile markers such as α-smooth muscle actin, SM-MHC, and calponin, confirming their mature smooth muscle phenotype. RAOSMCs display robust proliferation capacity and phenotypic flexibility, responding to vasoactive agonists like angiotensin II and mechanical stretch by modulating ECM gene expression (e.g., collagen I, fibronectin) and undergoing phenotypic switching. They are ideal for modeling vascular biology—including atherosclerosis, hypertension, and mechanotransduction. Each lot undergoes rigorous screening and isolation procedures and is tested to ensure it is free from contamination by Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • RAOSMC are widely applied in vascular research to study smooth muscle contraction, phenotypic modulation, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Their responsiveness to angiotensin II, mechanical stretch, and other vasoactive agents enables modeling of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and vascular calcification. RAOSMC also serve as a valuable tool for screening anti-proliferative and anti-fibrotic compounds in preclinical settings targeting smooth muscle–mediated vascular diseases.
